Monitor, Tv, Television, Flat Panel DisplayAre you watching more TV at the moment? Given the state of the world, it’s likely you are. From the new to escapist binge-watching your favorite series, the TV’s an integral part of our homes.

Which is why it’s important to keep that screen clean! Who wants to watch a great movie when there are fingerprints smeared all over the character’s faces?

Read on to discover our top tips for keeping that screen shiny, polished and smear-free…

Different cleaning products

Modern technology means that TV screens usually have a unique, protective coating that is anti-glare. This requires different cleaning products to those of old.

Simple products such as dish washing liquid in a mild solution or vinegar will clean your screen safely and effectively. It is worth buying a microfiber cloth especially for the TV as this is the best material to use for streak-free cleaning. Your TV might have come with one when you bought it.

Paper towels are likely to scratch the screen so should be avoided.

Use gentle, circular rubbing movements

Perhaps it’s common sense, but we’ll say it anyway. Turn the TV off before cleaning. Use a gentle circular motion to clean the screen.

Sony and Panasonic advise you use a mild solution of dishwashing liquid to clean any stubborn spots or marks on their LCD screens. By mild, they mean 100 times the amount of water to dishwashing liquid, a tiny amount. Distilled water is the best choice as tap water contains minerals that can leave water spots or residue on the screen.

Dampen rather than soak your cloth before using, as too much water risks ruining your TV. Afterwards, you should dry the screen with another microfiber cloth.

White vinegar

Another effective screen cleaner is white vinegar. Use a quarter cup to half a cup of distilled water and place in a spray bottle. Spritz on a lint-free cloth rather than directly at the screen and rub in gently.

You can also use isopropyl alcohol, which does not smell as strongly as vinegar. The solution is one to one, meaning one cup of isopropyl alcohol to one cup of distilled water for perfect results. Make sure the isopropyl alcohol you buy does not contain ethyl alcohol, which can be damaging to screens.

Just so you know, the above screen cleaning tips are also useful for spectacles, phone, tablet, laptop and desktop screens.
