Grapefruit – not just good for breakfast

There are lots of ordinary household items you can use as cleaning products. We’ve rounded up the best examples you can use to keep your home spick and span.

Use cinnamon as an air freshener

The delicious smell of cinnamon works as a great natural air freshener. It’s warm and welcoming too. All you need to do is sprinkle a small amount of the powdered spice on your carpet and vacuum it up.

Vinegar is a great all-purpose cleaner

But don’t use the expensive stuff! Save your Balsamic for the salads and use distilled white vinegar instead. Mix with equal parts of water and use for window cleaning, shifting limescale and for the fridge.

Stain remover

While corn starch is most often used in baking or as thickener in sauces, it’s also terrific if you spill something oily or greasy on your carpet. Cover the stain evenly with the corn starch and vacuum it up. A mix of corn starch and water also works well on silverware.

Zingy bathrooms

If you cut a grapefruit in half and sprinkle it with salt, you can use it to clean your bath, cutting out the need for any harsh chemicals.

Sticking with citrus fruits

Take those lemons out of your fruit bowl. They’re worth more than just a slice in your G&T! They are great for stains on chopping boards if you leave the juice in place for a while. The juice is good around taps for removing built-up dirt.

And throw in salt

Lemon juice mixed with salt creates a great scrub for cleaning and it can be mixed with water to pour down the sink, freshening it.

Vegetable oil paint remover

If you’ve been decorating the house, vegetable oil mixed with a little salt works as a gentle scrub to remove it. you can also use plain vegetable oil as a furnisher polish, though its best not to use this on your antiques.

Cola toilet cleaner

Cola is mildly acidic and can be used to clean toilets, lifting mineral marks and mild stains. Pour around the rim and into the bowl and leave for an hour. Flush twice.
