Maid Service Olney knows that for most of us laundry is a recurring job. Depending on the size of your family you might be using the washing machine twice a week, or perhaps every day.
Maid Service Olney has laundry tips to ensure your clothes emerge as super-clean as they can be.
Preparing your dirty laundry. To ensure thorough cleaning and protect the drum of your washing machine, preparation is essential. Secure Velcro, remove pins and brooches, unfurl socks and unroll cuffs. You should also tie strings and sashes, and put lingerie into mesh bags.
IMPORTANT TIP – check pockets for tissues. If you leave tissue paper in the washing machine, it will disintegrate, coating everything in miniscule pieces that are almost impossible to pick off.
Go easy on the fabric softener, especially when you are washing towels. Fabric softener affects the absorbency of towels. For every four washes of a towel, make one of them softener-free to preserve.
Use the exact amount of washing powder or liquid. It’s tempting to throw a lot in there, but modern formulations are super strong. Too much powder or liquid will clog up the internal workings of your machine and lead to a build-up of bacteria.
Wash whites separately, as this will keep them whiter. They should also be washed at a warmer temperature than colours. You can make your own whitening formulation using half a cup of white or cider vinegar mixed in with a gallon of water during the washing machine cycle. Hang your whites out to dry in sunshine, if possible, as this acts as a natural bleach. It’s the environmentally-friendly approach too, says Maid Service Olney.
Ditch the dry cleaning. Something labelled dry cleaning doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be cleaned that way, especially if it’s made from natural fibers such as wool, silk and linen. Do hand wash them, though, in a mild solution of warm water and a gentle detergent. Rinse until the water runs clear and gently squeeze out the excess water. You should reshape items flat on a towel and leave to dry flat too.
Do regular service washes. A service wash is where you run the machine at a high temperature with nothing in it. This helps maintain your washing machine and should be done about every 40 washes. Most modern machines will have a setting especially for this. Maintain the machine by also wiping it out after every wash, removing anything trapped in the rubber seal and leaving the door open if possible.
