Polishing a table, drying dishes and putting away the washing—these are cleaning niceties, but there are cleaning nasties out there.

We mean the jobs that involve grime, dirt and even hazardous substances that can affect health. What are House Cleaning Falls Church tips for dealing with cleaning nasties?

Drain and sink holes. Smelly drains and sink holes result thanks to food build up in the kitchen and hair and debris in the bathroom. The latter often leads to slow draining too and soap scum will gather around the hole, making it dirty and unpleasant.

You can treat them two ways. Heat four cups of distilled white vinegar to a simmer. Pour two of them down the drain, rinse well with cold water and then add the rest of the vinegar. This method can get rid of small blockages.

Or run hot water down the train, turn off and sprinkle a cup of baking soda there. Rinse with two cups of hot vinegar, which will fizz when it reacts with the baking soda so stand well back. Leave for half an hour and then flush through with plenty of hot water.

It’s a good idea to pour hot vinegar down your drains weekly to stop build-up.

Pet excrement. Pet feces, urine or vomit is an occupational hazard if you’re a pet owner. We accept that our furry friends do not come alone! But feces, urine and vomit obviously present a helath hazard. And the stuff can stain carpets, floors, bedding and upholstery too.

For urine, use paper towels to blot all the liquid until the towel comes up dry. Then, apply white vinegar to the area, as this will deter your pet from using the spot again. Add a small amount, rub it into the fibres and leave overnight.

Apply baking soda the next day. Sprinkle on the stain, leave for a few hours and then vacuum thoroughly.

For feces, remove the poo. Use a damp paper towel to wipe away any remaining bits, but dab rather than scrub as you don’t want to spread it too far. Use a mix of washing-up liquid, water and white vinegar to clean the area and stain. You can also treat with ready-made pet stain removers. Consider baking soda too once the area is dry to neutralise any remaining odors.

Vomit can be cleaned with Oxiclean, once you have removed as much of it as possible from your carpet. House Cleaning Falls Church offers fast, effective carpet cleaning.

Insect infestations. Yuck and double yuck! Vacuum up droppings, such as cockroach ones, then clean the surfaces with a warm water soap solution. You sweep or vacuum first, then wash. For any major infestation, you might need to call in the experts. And look at other ways to proof your home, such as closing up gaps and holes where cluster flies can enter.
