House Cleaning Arlington – Fall Cleaning Tips

house cleaning ArlingtonHouse cleaning Arlington services likes to offer seasonal cleaning tips. In the Fall, one of the jobs you might need to do is clean leaves and leave stains from your drive way.

To make the job fun and inclusive, why not get the whole family involved? One of the simplest joys at this time of year is jumping into a pile of leaves or kicking them through. You’ll be tidying them up of course, but allow extra time for this simple pleasure.

The first step is to rake the leaves into piles, or sweep them up using a hard outdoor brush. Move the piles to the side of the area you intend to clean. Leaves can usually be disposed of in compost bins or the green waste trash can.

A high pressure water hose will get rid of the surface dirt. Then sprinkle the area with a little powder laundry detergent to break down the stains. Leave for a few minutes and then scrub thoroughly to clean.

House Cleaning Arlington – Gutter Clearing

Another Fall cleaning tip is cleaning out your roof gutters, required at this time of year thanks to those leaves. Blocked gutters can cause a lot of problems. Water can pool on your roof and then leak into your home. Blocked gutters are also attractive termites. Sliding, windows, doors and foundations are all affected, so regular gutter cleaning is a must.

You’ll need ladders, so do make sure they are safe! You will also need a trowel, garbage bags, a stiff brush, safety specs, work gloves and a pressure hose. If you do the job after light rain, that may make it easier to lift out the damp leaves and dirt. If you do use a leaf blower everything needs to be dried out completely beforehand.

Start with the drain outlets, as most of the gunk will have gathered here. Use your trowel to scoop everything out. When you have cleared the gutter, section by section, use the hose to remove anything you might have missed.

It’s best to do this job will a willing partner who can feed you the hose when you need it and make sure you don’t miss any of the gutter sections. Use the hose too to check how the water is draining away. Your gutters might need adjustment.

Kitchen Cleaning

Fall cleaning should also involve giving the kitchen a good going over. The refrigerator and the oven definitely need regular cleaning anyway. Take all the shelves out of the fridge to wash, and ensure you clean the area around and under your fridge. Food builds up everywhere! For the oven, place a ceramic dish of ammonia in your oven overnight to help loosen the worst of the burnt-on food. That should make the overall oven cleaning job easier.

Get your oven grunge-free for christmas

Oven cleaning – it’s not something the majority of us look forward to. But let’s face it, it has to be done. And now, with the prospect of lots of Christmas cooking on the horizon, is probably as good a time as any. Why? Well, an oven that isn’t clean won’t distribute heat properly meaning the quality and taste of your food could be affected.

Ovencleaning

So, roll up the sleeves and lets get cracking. Read on for the Budget Maids blog to getting a grunge-free oven:

Keep it clean on a regular basis. This makes sense of course. It’s just finding the time to do so. Making the time is worth it though. It means that, come the end of the year, cleaning your oven won’t be as intensive and therefore will take half as long (meaning you will have time to enjoy a congratulatory glass of wine afterwards).

Chemical or natural cleaners? If using chemical cleaners it’s important to protect your hands using rubber gloves. To let them work their magic allow the chemicals to remain on the oven for a few hours or even overnight. Expect to engage lots of elbow grease when scrubbing off and rinsing.

Natural cleaners include white vinegar and baking soda. Make a thick paste using water and baking soda and apply to the inside of the oven. Leave for several hours then rinse off with a mixture of white vinegar and water via a bottle spray. The paste will fizz. Leave for another few hours then remove with a damp sponge. Voila.

Now you can be assured the only thing that could potentially ruin your Christmas dinner will be your own culinary talents rather than your oven!

Keep those kitchen items in constant working order by cleaning

Here at Budget Maids we are aware that there are certain items in our kitchens that we use every day and rely on so heavily that it would be painful if they broke down. So – all the more reason to give them a service and clean up every now and again to prevent any future tears.

Here we list three of our most used kitchen items – the oven, washing machine and that all important coffee roaster.

Keeping your oven clean

Ok, we’re probably all guilty of having an oven that isn’t exactly sparkling. But that’s because it’s used so often there’s little chance to clean it. But, if you get into the habit of wiping it down every time you use it, you’ll never again have to face that dreaded big scrub with chemicals and plenty of elbow grease again.

Ammonia bleach and water usually does the trick but remember to wear rubber gloves and even a face mask as we’re talking strong chemicals here (and avoid if pregnant). Alternatively you could use bicarbonate of soda and water, smear it on the oven and leave overnight then get ready for some heavy elbow grease action next day.

In terms of the ammonia, take the shelves out and spray them separately and leave for two hours before soaking in water then washing with detergent. Spray the inside of the oven too and rinse.

Make sure your washing machine cycle continues

When you think of what we expect our washing machines to do, it’s no wonder they get dirty and bunged up with gunge sometimes. Do the following every month or so and you should be able to keep cleaning clothes to your heart’s content:

  • Defluff the filter – always lots of lint in there
  • Refresh the detergent drawer – wipe with a cloth and a toothbrush for corners
  • Rinse the machine – run empty on a hot wash with some vinegar to get rid of soap   scum

Manage your coffee machine

Cafetieres can be kept clean by just immersing them in hot soapy water, as can the filter and jug of electric coffee machines. Descale with water and white vinegar.

The same applies for a cappuccino or expresso maker, except wash the steam nozzle too in hot soapy water.

None of the above take long to do but they sure save a heap of time when it comes to once a year cleans on the above items (especially the oven – yeuch).

Budget Maids Best Ways to Tackle Tough Cleaning Tasks

When it comes to cleaning, it’s always one of the most dreaded cleaning tasks in most households, we’ve found at Budget Maids here in VA. Yes, scrubbing out the oven usually gets left ‘til last, either that or allotted a whole half day on its own. That’s because this is hard work – especially if you adopt the natural ingredients method ie covering it overnight with a paste of bicarbonate of soda then scrubbing hard with a scratchy pad next day.

The alternative is to use lots of chemicals, remembering to put on a face mask and rubber gloves. Remove the oven shelves and spray them with your chosen formula (ammonia and water usually). Put in a place where no-one is likely to go near them, then spray the inside of the oven. Wait a few hours before rinsing with plenty of water then wash both the shelves and the inside of the oven with warm soapy water.

One of the other least liked kitchen cleaning task is sponging down the fridge. This is best carried out weekly where the shelves and plastic compartments are given a wash in warm soapy water. You can wash the inside of the fridge with a mixture of bicarbonate of soda and warm water. An old toothbrush is great for cleaning up the rubber seal on the door.

If there’s any stubborn stains they can usually be cleaned by rubbing toothpaste on the mark and leaving it for some time before washing off. Meanwhile, it may seem strange, but twice a year it’s worth pulling the fridge out from the wall and running a vacuum over the cooling elements. Believe it or not this will actually make them run more efficiently.
