Here are our tops tips for tidying your home office.

  1. If you keep all your important papers in one drawer or file, then they are impossible to find quickly. Take the time to sort out papers into relevant classes – say, tax info, receipts, utility bills, health insurance, banking etc – then give them a drawer or box file all of their own and label it clearly.
  2. A fireproof, four-drawer filing cabinet is a good investment. This will make life easier for when you are looking for those essential documents.
  3. Can you reduce paperwork? Some services (such as utilities) provide bonuses or discounts for going online. Do this wherever possible.
  4. Set up an inbox which will keep all your “to do” items – but remember that once you have dealt with that item, then it must be filed.
  5. We recommend a clean desk policy for the end of each day. When you finish working in your office, clear the desk and any other office surfaces. Coming into a clean office is more uplifting than entering chaos!
  6. Take time regularly to throw out what you don’t need or use – old pens, stray paper clips, and any unnecessary paperwork, old magazines and broken equipment. Remember, a lot of this stuff can be recycled).
  7. How long should you keep papers? Here’s a quick guide: tax returns and supporting paperwork (seven years, or forever if you have the space); pay stubs (one year); investment statements (one year, or until you get your year-end statements; bank statements (one year); medical bills (one year); and credit card statements (one month – check them for accuracy).

Home cleaning advice for asthma sufferers

Many of us are staying indoors these days due to the cold weather that’s hit the east coast. Which is fine for the majority of us. The asthma sufferers, however, are having a really hard time right now because it’s not always easy to keep your home allergy free.

According to theCenters for Disease Control and Prevention, one in 12 US citizens suffer from asthma, and a high percentage of asthma attacks are caused by our homes and other indoor environments.

Allergens are everywhere

Allergens play a huge role in causing asthma attacks, and the bad news is that they’re everywhere. But knowing where to clean and following through on a regular basis will certainly help reduce your home’s allergen load.  You’ll find allergens on surfaces such as carpets, pets, upholstered furniture, scatter cushions and the likes.  Dusting the furniture and cushions will actually do very little to help and in fact will only worsen the situation. Wash or dry-clean these items instead.

Vacuuming for dust mites

‘Fraid to say it folks but we all have dust mites in our home. And this is particularly bad news for asthma sufferers. One way to reduce the number of dust mites is to vacuum thoroughly, and regularly (up to three times a week). Cleaners with double filter bags are best. 

Wet wipes

Dust can escape even the best cleaner, but it can never escape a wipe with a wet cloth. Gently wash or wipe surfaces in your home which you’re aware collect dust (rather than use a duster which simply sends dust clouds into the air, creating a bigger nightmare for asthma sufferers).

A routine that rocks

Falling back on old habits, or worse – doing no cleaning during the week at all – happens.  The answer is to create a routine that works specifically for you.  Find a time of day you can set aside for cleaning – it needn’t be more than 15 to 30 minutes.  A particularly good time is when everyone else is either sleeping or out.  

Family time

Household cleaning can also double as family time.  Apart from your weekday cleaning routine, have a set time for weekend cleaning when the rest of the family can help out.  It means you can choose one day in the week when you do no cleaning at all.

Nothing like a schedule

Ever been truly impressed at how some people just manage to always keep to a routine?  Well, routine means a schedule and – most importantly – keeping to it (no point in having a schedule if you pick and choose the tasks you like rather than stick rigidly to it).Stick to that schedule long enough, in fact, and it’ll become so routine that you don’t even notice you’re doing it half the time.
