Outdoor Furniture Cleaning Tips

maid service RockvilleOutdoor furniture needs cleaning too – as our maid service Rockville will tell you.

But is there an easy way to do this? After all, you don’t want to add yet more things to your to do list. (Although, of course, our maid service Rockville could also do it for you!) Here are our tips for making outdoor furniture cleaning as easy as possible…

For white plastic, you need a gallon of warm water and 3tbsp of dishwashing powder, as this contains chemicals that will whiten the plastic. Use a sponge or soft brush to apply and leave the solution on the furniture for fifteen minutes. Rinse and dry. Use this on white plastic ONLY.

For coloured plastic, use an all-purpose cleaner and water, and rinse well.

Aluminium that has a baked-on enamel finish is easy to scratch, so use a sponge soaked in detergent and water or a non-abrasive specialist cleaner. Scrub, rinse and dry.

If you want to keep the shine on plastics, resins and metal furniture, wax it. remove the cushions first, as wax can stain. Apply with a soft cloth, allow to dry and buff well.

For outdoor cushions, mix a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent with one quart warm water and one tablespoon of Borax. Soak a sponge in the mix and wash the cushions. Or you can put the mixture in a spray bottle and saturate the back and front of the cushions. Let the soaked cushions sit for fifteen minutes and then spray with plenty of water. Stand them on their side to try. Once dry, spray with a fabric protector. You can also vacuum the cushions between washes to keep the dust off.

If you have canvas seats, most of the time the canvas is removeable, so you can take it off and place it in the washing machine. It is easier to put the canvas back on while it is damp, as this will help it keep its shape.

If you can’t take it off, use a scrubbing brush and laundry soap. Load the brush with the soap and scrub the canvas. Rinse well. This should get rid of all stains and dirt.

If you clean your outdoor furniture regularly, it will last much longer – giving you plenty of years of sitting outside to enjoy the sunshine.

Budget Maids Time-Saving Cleaning

Budget MaidsWhy book regular cleaning services through companies such as Budget Maids?

Well, the main thing is you get your life back! The average American working week is about 49 hours. Who wants to come home and spend the time cleaning?

We know you don’t need much help thinking up ideas of what to do with the extra time you get from not cleaning, but just in case you do, here are some ideas…

Sleep! Seven to eight hours of sleep is ideal. You’ll wake up (in your gorgeously clean bedroom, thanks to Budget Maids) feeling refreshed and energetic.

Barbecue. The summer’s here, so of course, you want to invite friends and family for a barbecue. Continuing on the outsourcing theme, tell them it’s a potluck barbecue. They can bring the sides, the salads and the ice-cream and you’ll do the cooking. (Budget Maids can clean it up for you afterwards.)

Take up a new hobby. We bet there’s some hobby or craft you’ve wanted to take up for a while, but what with work and cleaning, you haven’t found the time. Now, thanks to Budget Maids, you have it in abundance.

Spend quality time with friends. This is something else that tends to fall by the wayside when we’re working hard. Go bowling, arrange a group picnic. Better still, invite friends around to your newly-tidy home, eat cakes and drink wine.

Do some outdoor stuff. What’s your fancy? Hiking? Running? Quad biking? Whatever it is, treat yourself to plenty of fresh air, safe in the knowledge that you will be returning to a super-clean home.

Take your dog an extra long walk. Heat permitting, your dog will love a long walk with you now that you have time to spare. Regular walks contribute to the health of both of you.

Cook a special meal. Weekdays, we tend to grab and go when it comes to food. Now that you don’t need to spend your weekends cleaning, why not pick a recipe that takes a little longer. Pulled pork done in the crock pot is super easy. Serve with brioche buns, homemade slaw and crackling on the side.

We know our customers work really hard, and the thought of additional work when they return home isn’t welcome at all which is why we at Budget Maids provide fantastic cleaning services at cost-effective prices. Contact us today at info@budgetmaids.com to find out more.

House Cleaning Potomac: How to Clean a Washing Machine

house cleaning PotomacIt happens to the best of us, yes even the house cleaning Potomac experts! We open the washing machine door one day and… eww, the stench!

The washing machine is a hard-working piece of kit in most households so no wonder it starts to smell less than fragrant from time to time. What can you do to prevent it stinking out your utility room?

Run regular service washes

Nowadays, many of us wash clothing at low temperatures. It’s great for the environment, and it saves us money through reduced utility bills. But, there’s an issue, and that is cleanliness. Lower temperatures don’t wash away dirt, mold and bacteria in the machine as well as higher ones.

The machine’s service wash setting will be hot. Using this setting as often as the manufacturer recommends will keep your machine fresh and clean.

Turn off the machine and clean the seal, drawer and filter

Mold and bacteria can lurk in the rubber seal around the door hole. Soak a sponge in a cider vinegar/water mix and wipe around the area carefully, rinsing afterwards. If you can’t remove the mold because it’s been there too long, you may need to think about replacing the seal.

Do as the house cleaning Potomac experts do and regularly clean the detergent drawer and the filter to remove the build-up of dirt and washing powder.

Leave the door and drawer open

If possible, leave the washing machine’s door and drawer open as much as possible. This allows air to circulate and prevents the build-up of mold.

Smelliness might be caused by a blocked standpipe. If you think this is the case, try to unblock the pipe to get rid of any build-up.

Use the right amount of detergent

Most of us are guilty of using too much. Lots of washing powder means spotless clothes, right? Not so. Modern formulations are super effective. If you use too much, then the machine can’t rinse and clear residue away properly. The excess powder will build up, create blockages and contribute to bacterial growth.

Other tips for washing machine cleanliness include:

  • Take washing out of the machine as soon as the cycle has finished
  • Don’t use the machine as a substitute laundry basket. Clothes should go in there just before putting it on.

Here at Budget Maids, we provide cleaning services in Olney, house cleaning Potomac or maid services in Columbia and surrounds (i.e. VA and most of Maryland). Why not give us a call today and let us help you with all the very worst cleaning jobs?

How Often Should You Clean Things?

house cleaning ViennaSome cleaning jobs are obvious. We at house cleaning Vienna hope that you wash dishes after you use them, for example! Others aren’t quite so straight-forward.

Here’s the house cleaning guide to what to clean and when.

Duvets. Your duvet should be laundered every six months. You might need to do this through a specialist service, depending on the size of the duvet.

Pillows. Naturally filled pillows should be aired outside regularly during the summer months – every few weeks. Wash them every three months, but remember they need two-three days to dry properly.

Foam-filled pillows. Sponge in warm, soapy water every six months.

Hollowfibre/polyester pillows. These can be washed in the washing machine. Do this every six months. Pillowcases should be washed at least every two weeks.

Your fridge. Ideally, the fridge should be cleaned every month. Take everything out, get rid of any out-of-date or spoiled foods. Wipe over the surfaces with a dilute solution of washing liquid, wash the shelves and containers. Dry everything carefully.

House Cleaning Vienna – Professional Services

Upholstered furniture. Furniture should be cleaned every six to 12 months. Choose the right products and carry out a test before use to check. You can also choose to have the furniture cleaned professionally.

Carpets. Have your carpets cleaned every six months, more often if you have pets or children with a sense of adventure! Budget Maids offers professional carpet cleaning services using a dry cleaning service that minimizes down time.

Washing machines. Yes, even washing machines get dirty. Clean yours every six months. If it’s a front-loading machine, the rubber seal picks up lint, hair and dirt. Spray it with white cleaning vinegar, and wipe with a microfiber cloth. Set the washer to its hottest setting. Add two cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser. Run the washing machine through a complete cycle.

Mattress. Clean the mattress every six months to keep bed bugs at bay. It’s not a hard job, we promise! Vacuum the surface, then remove stains using a light solution of upholstery cleaner, a sponge and water. Don’t soak the mattress as this will cause mildew. Leave the mattress to dry out thoroughly before sleeping on it. We recommend turning the mattress every six months too.

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services in Arlington, a maid service in Vienna or house cleaning Vienna and surrounds, cleaning services in Olney and Oakton and more. Why not give us a call today and let us do all those nuisance cleaning jobs for you?

House Cleaning Oakton: Further Cleaning Resolutions

house cleaning Oakton

Keep those drains clean in 2017!

How are you getting on with your cleaning resolutions? We made some house cleaning Oakton suggestions at the start of the year, but we’ve taken the liberty of adding to them!

Here are our additional tips – some of the things you might overlook regularly.

The toaster. If you want to avoid fire risk, the toaster crumb tray must be cleaned out regularly. Make this easier by lining the tray with aluminium foil.

Plug holes. It isn’t a pleasant job, but trapped hair and debris must be removed from the shower or bath drains regularly to stop build up that will lead to blockages. Once or twice a month use an old skewer to remove trapped hair and then clean the plug hole with a solution of cider vinegar and hot water.

Laptop. Are you guilty of eating in front of your laptop? If so, you’ll need to clean the keyboard regularly. Every two weeks, unplug is and turn it upside down to get rid of any crumbs lodged between the keys. Wipe with a clean cloth to get rid of sticky marks and use an air duster to blow everything out.

Make the swap to green cleaning products. Here at Budget Maids house cleaning Oakton we use green cleaning products because we care about the environment. Most green products work very well these days.

Invest in large tubs of cider vinegar. Cider vinegar makes and excellent cleaning solution for bathrooms, kitchens, fridges and more.

Wipe out your kitchen cupboards once a month. This also helps you keep on top of what foods have gone out of date, particularly dry goods such as flour, rice and couscous.

Wipe down and clean kitchen surfaces as soon as you have prepared food. It makes life easier in the long run, we promise.

Spray bathroom cleaner after every shower. Again, this makes life easier in the long run because it stops the build-up of nasty soap scum and dirt. Choose a green cleaning product or one that is specifically for daily use.

Think of cleaning as activity. Regular activity is important in our daily lives as it helps keep us fit and healthy. If you think of house cleaning as exercise, you’ll do it better and more efficiently!

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services Reston, house cleaning Oakton, a maid service Olney or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure that we help you keep your house clean and tidy in 2017?

HOUSE CLEANING ARLINGTON: CLEANING RESOLUTIONS

house cleaning ArlingtonHouse Cleaning Arlington has some ideas for you if you are starting 2017 with cleaning resolutions. Naturally, we make them every year too. We vow to work harder than ever to provide the best cleaning service in the Arlington, Falls Church, Oakton, Columbia, Potomac, Olney, Oakton, Reston and Rockville areas!

Go Green. Make this the year you swap to eco-friendly cleaning products. These days, eco-friendly products are very good indeed. You won’t notice the difference and the environment will thank you.

Clean the fridge regularly. If there is one thing in your kitchen that gets used regularly, it’s the fridge. The germ potential is huge. Make it a resolution to store everything properly, throw out food past it’s use-by date or spoiled and CLEAN THAT FRIDGE WEEKLY!

Minimize clutter. Neat, tidy rooms are easier to relax in. De-cluttering can be intimidating. Make it easier by doing a little at a time. It’s easier if you ask a friend to help and promise to do the same in return. Your friend will be more ruthless.

Opt for more digital storage. Digital storage helps with de-cluttering and cleaning up in general. Scan in photos, opt for e-books, music and films and you find yourself with a lot more house room.

Make cleaning a family thing. Unfairly, the bulk of cleaning often falls on wives and moms. Start the year with a cleaning schedule. The way to make this succeed is not to do the job if it doesn’t get done in time or to your standards. If you tell teenagers they won’t get pocket money or their allowance if they don’t clean their room, stick to your guns.

Start vacuuming or sweeping up more if you have pets. We love our pets, but boy can they be messy. A build-up of pet hair can trigger allergic reactions and it can be a nuisance. Sitting on the sofa shouldn’t mean you end up with lots of cat hair clinging to your clothes. Ideally, sweep the floors and vacuum carpets every second day.

And there we have it – six cleaning resolutions to make and keep. If you want to make life much easier, remember that house cleaning Arlington can help. Book us in for a once-a-week service that will keep your house in mint condition. Happy New Year from all of us at Budget Maids!

House Cleaning Oakton: Guest Prep

house cleaning Oakton

Read our tips for making your home more welcoming to guests!

Are you entertaining this Christmas? Will you be having guests to stay? It’s lovely to be able to entertain family and friends at this time of year, but it can be a stressful experience for the host.

Read on to find house cleaning Oakton experts advice about preparing for guests…

Stock up your bathroom

Make sure you have plenty of clean towels and extra toiletries – liquid soap shampoo, shower gel, hand lotion and toothpaste. People notice bathrooms and their levels of cleanliness, so ensure your bathroom/bathrooms are spic and span before guests arrive. House cleaning Oakton experts recommend attention to detail here. After cleaning your bath and sink, dry them with a cloth as this makes the room look cleaner overall.

Make sure there is plenty of toilet roll in the bathroom too. There’s nothing more awkward than being a guest in someone’s home and running out…

Sort out the bedroom

Clean sheets are a must. Each bed should have two pillows per person, one firm and one soft so that guests can choose what they prefer. Provide an overthrow blanket too, in case it gets cold.

Leave out some books and magazines too. This is a nice touch as a lot of people like to read before going to sleep.

House Cleaning Oakton – Allergy Checks

Check for allergies/food issues

Ask your guests beforehand if any of them have allergies that you should be aware of. Find out about food preferences too. You might be entertaining vegetarians or vegans. If anyone has a peanut allergy, it’s very important to keep peanuts out of the house as the reaction to this can be severe.

Stock up on teas and coffees

Most people have a preference for what they like to drink first thing. Good ground coffee, breakfast tea, Earl Grey and a herbal option are good. Stock up on some soft drinks too and fresh fruit juice.

Ask guests to help

If any guest offers help, accept it! Many hosts feel that their guests shouldn’t have to do anything, but that makes people uncomfortable. They are aware that you have put a huge amount of work into preparation and entertainment, why not let people help by washing up, clearing the table and more?

Here at Budget Maids we provide house cleaning Oakton, a maid service in Arlington, house cleaning in Olney or cleaning services in Potomac and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you to make sure that your home is perfectly clean and ready for the arrival of guests?

Maid Service Falls Church – Tips for Towels

maid service Falls Church

Cute, we know, but maybe you shouldn’t let your cat sleep on your guests’ towels.

What makes your hotel guest experience special – the towels? Yes, according to a recent consumer survey.

Xeros, laundry industry specialists, asked more than 1,100 US and UK consumers what was most important to them when visiting hotels. Travelers like cleanliness, and then softness when they judge towel quality. The standard of towels in a hotel has an impact on guest satisfaction, brand perception and customer loyalty according to Xeros.

Overall customer satisfaction is affected by the quality of towels – and incredibly, 73 percent of people surveyed said the quality of towels would influence their decision to go back to a particular hotel brand in future.

Maid Service Falls Church – Expert Advice

If towels are so important to people, this must mean that they matter in the home too. How can you ensure your towels are hotel standard for when guests visit? We asked our maid service Falls Church for their expert advice…

As a general rule, towels should be washed every three uses. You need to change towels frequently because of the rate we humans shed skin cells. Imagine the build-up. Ewww… Of course, you’ll be giving your guests clean towels when they arrive. If they are staying for a while, ask them how often they would like fresh towels.

Wash hand and face towels more often. They will be getting more use. At the minimum, they should be replaced every other day.

Wash them at a high temperature (140 degrees), using a biological powder that contains bleach. You can use fabric softener but don’t use it every time as this will reduce the absorbency of towels.

Dry them in a tumble drier for softest, fluffiest results. If you can put them outside to dry, they will be nice and fresh. That’s the more environmentally friendly option too.

Wash the same colours together. You want your white towels to remain pristine!

Add one cup of distilled white vinegar to your towel laundry once a month as this will improve absorbency and get rid of any mustiness.

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services in Arlington, a maid service Falls Church or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure that your towels and bathrooms are wonderfully clean and impressing your guests?

Maid Service Arlington: Teenagers and Clean Homes

maid service ArlingtonWe bet you just read our headline and did a double take – woah, Maid Service Arlington, what are you talking about?! Teenagers and clean homes? No such thing, right?

Those of you who share a home with a teenager (or more than one) may well be familiar with the challenges of peaceful co-existence. Add cleanliness into the mix and it’s a recipe for rows, the stamping of feet and lots of screaming. And that’s just you…

But it doesn’t need to be so. There are ways you can involve and persuade your teenager to be part of your household cleanliness routine. Read on to find out more.

Maid Service Arlington – Tips for Teenagers and Clean Homes

Be realistic. If you give your teenager too many chores, chances are he or she won’t do them all. Decide what must be done and what isn’t essential, and then chase them up when they don’t do the “must” jobs.

Make cleaning a bargaining tool. If your teen wants to have friends over, then you make him or her responsible for clearing up afterwards. It can also be a condition for other privileges such as going out and staying out later at the weekend.

Negotiate the cleaning. Everyone has different standards. Yours might be higher (or even lower) than your teen’s. Talk to your teenagers and negotiate the cleaning standards. Your teen might think a clean bedroom is one with no clothes lying on the floor, while you might think polishing is necessary too. Talk, negotiate.

Set consequences and follow through. If your teenager knows there is a consequence for not doing as you ask and that it WILL happen, then you are more likely to get results. Consequences should be reasonable. If reasonable requests for you teenager to tidy his room aren’t met, you could tell him that you will be hiring local cleaners – such as the maid service Arlington – to do the job instead, and paying for them using his pocket money.

Be specific. Again, if you ask a teenager to tidy up, be clear what you expect. Clean the kitchen, for example, isn’t as clear as “Please wash the dishes, put them away and wipe down the surfaces”.

Set a good example. If your own bedroom is a chaotic mess, it’s not reasonable to expect teenagers to be clean and tidy themselves.

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services in Oakton, a maid service Arlington or cleaning services in Potomac and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure your house spick and span, whether you have teenagers or not?

Top Spots for Bacteria in Your Home

top spots for bacteria in your homeWhere are the top spots for bacteria in your home?

The toilet is an obvious choice, but other spots might surprise you – the kitchen sponge, the bath tub near the drain and your kids toys for example.

Recent research by the toilet cleaner brand Harpic revealed that some 40,000 germs per square inch can be found on the average toilet handle, while there are 6,000 bacteria per square inch on bathroom taps. These include E.coli, staphylococcus and streptococcus.

Euww…

The research makes a good case for always flushing your toilet with the lid down. When you flush, an explosion of bacteria-ridden water gets forced into the air. Called aerolization, this phenomenon is made worse by warm and wet conditions, which are common in bathrooms.

Budget Maids certainly recommends frequent bathroom cleaning, using a good anti-bacterial cleaning agent and that you pay close attention to the soap dispensers, the door handles and the light switches in the bathroom, as well as everything else.

In general, the top spots for bacteria in your home are the toilet bowl, the kitchen drain, the bathtub and the kitchen sink. Toys, pet food dishes and the floor area around your toilet (train the men in your household to aim well!) are also where you’ll find lots of bacteria.

Another happy home for germs is the kitchen sponge or counter-wiping cloth. We suggest that you microwave your kitchen sponge on high for 60 seconds every evening to kill off bacteria and germs.

While many people worry about hygiene practices in reestuarants or hotels that they visit, the home is really the worst place for germs and bacteria. Although hotels and restaurants have many people passing through their doors, they also operate strict cleaning procedures. Rooms, for example, with have bathrooms cleaned every day and kitchen staff are trained in hygiene practices.

In addition, hotels and restaurants won’t have family pets wandering round and they certainly won’t have cats jumping up on kitchen surfaces!

A little exposure to germs and bacteria is no bad thing – but bear in mind the top spots for bacteria when you are cleaning your home and pay them extra special attention to keep your family safe and healthy.

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services Reston, a maid service Olney or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure that we help you tackle the top spots for bacteria in your home and keep your family safe?
