Leave it to sit for five minutes. Use a cloth of sponge to rub it off and then continue to clean the entire window.
Crusty stains or deposits can be removed with a razor.
The outside of the window gets much dirtier than the inside. Tackle this by spraying the windows with the garden hose before cleaning. This will help get rid of the worst of it.

To make your own window cleaner, you can use equal parts of water and distilled white vinegar. This will help prevent streaks. You can also use dishwashing liquid but use this sparingly, as most modern formulations are highly concentrated. All you need is one teaspoon per two gallons of water.
A sponge is the best way to apply cleaning solution. Dip it into the mix, squeeze it out and apply over the whole window. If you are cleaning from the inside, put down towels or sheets to absorb water spills.
Use the squeegee to wipe the windows dry. For small-paned windows, move horizontally from side to side. Larger windows can be done top to bottom. A sharp blade on the squeegee prevents streaks. Replace yours when the blade gets dull.
Wipe the window with a lint-free cloth. Use a different cloth to dry the window frame thoroughly.
Don’t forget your blinds. These should be cleaned regularly too, as they pick up grime and ust easily.
