Recent research by the toilet cleaner brand Harpic revealed that some 40,000 germs per square inch can be found on the average toilet handle, while there are 6,000 bacteria per square inch on bathroom taps. These include E.coli, staphylococcus and streptococcus.

The research makes a good case for always flushing your toilet with the lid down. When you flush, an explosion of bacteria-ridden water gets forced into the air. Called aerolization, this phenomenon is made worse by warm and wet conditions, which are common in bathrooms.

This will also help prevent water build up and mold.

Clear out clutter. Do you have drawers full of clothes you don’t wear? If there are any items of clothing you haven’t worn in a year, donate them to charity shops or throw them out. This frees up space and makes sure you don’t have items cluttering up your surfaces.

Choose the right broom. For indoors, you need one with finer bristles which will pick up dust. For outside, stronger, stiffer bristles work best. You should sweep from the outside in and move the dust and dirt to the centre of the room so that it’s easier to pick up.

To dry floors quickly, use an old towel and place it underneath your feet. Move the towel around the floor surface and “walk” the floor. Remember to wash it well afterwards.

love of cleaningIs love on your mind? Probably – as the annual celebration that is Valentine’s Day has just been and gone, it’s hard not to think about love. But what about love of cleaning?

We want to share some news with you that you might find surprising – there are lots of women who love cleaning! The Real Simple website surveyed Facebook followers and found that 90 percent of them either liked cleaning or having cleaned something.

It’s a form of meditation. Cleaning can be calming, helping you to de-stress from your working day or from hours spent running round after the kids. A lot of people choose to clean accompanied my music or a Podcast. It can be perfect “me” time, and it can stop all those racing thoughts as you concentrate on getting surfaces perfectly polished or glasses sparkling clean.

It gives you a sense of achievement. If you have ever spent 15 minutes or so scrubbing a saucepan to get rid of the burnt on food, you will know exactly what we mean by this. There’s a huge sense of satisfaction to be gained as the crusted on food comes off. Cleaning can produce great results – tangible results and an end product that you can see.

It can be a bit of a work-out. If you spend a lot of time in an office, the likelihood is that you are spending a lot of time sitting. Most household jobs will require you to stand and move around – whether that is vigorously polishing a table, washing floors, cleaning skirting boards or running up and down stairs to tidy up laundry. Moving your body almost always makes you feel better.

computer cleaningWe thought we’d take a slightly different stance on cleaning and housework this week – and talk about cleaning up your PC and keeping your files in order online.

If you’re anything like us, you’ll often open up your laptop or fire up your PC and trying to find anything is a labor of love… Because we provide services such as house cleaning Oakton, maid service Reston, cleaning service in Falls Church, we have a familiarity with simple tips that can help clear up your clutter online.

As an added bonus, getting rid of some of the clutter will also speed up your PC’s performance.

Update your anti-virus software and run a scan. This will delete any foreign files that are trying to access your computer and keep it safe.

Clear up space on your hard drive by deleting unnecessary files. For windows, go to disk clean-up (all programs> accessories> system tools> disk clean up and for Macs, go to applications> utilities> commands prompt and type in “sudo rm -fr /tmp/” and hit enter.

Uninstall programs you don’t use. For windows, you will find this under the control panel which will bring up a list of programs that you can then look at and decide which ones you no longer use.

Now for sorting out your files:

Use folders. Yes, it takes a bit of initial work but creating folders and storing the relevant files in them will save you so much time in the long run. Create folders in your Documents. Suggestions might include – Tax Information, Letters, Home Stuff, Homework and essays for example.

Rename all photos. Again, this can be pain but if you rename all photos and pics as you upload them then it’s much easier to find them when you are looking for a particular picture. Once you have renamed them all, it is a good idea to put them in folders too – 2016 summer pics, for example, or the kids, the dogs etc.

Don’t put too much stuff on your desktop. It looks messy and it’s a bad idea because it slows your PC or Mac down.

And finally, there’s the physical aspect of the cleanliness of your PC/laptop/Mac. In an ideal world, no-one would eat or drink anywhere near their tech, but we all do… Keyboards therefore need frequent cleaning – turn them upside down and shake out the crumbs or buy yourself one of the mini vacuum cleaners you can use to suck them out. You’ll be amazed…
