Ditch the dry cleaning. Something labelled dry cleaning doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be cleaned that way, especially if it’s made from natural fibers such as wool, silk and linen. You should reshape items flat on a towel and leave to dry flat too.

You’ll need a non-bleach dish detergent, 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, a towel, cloth or paper towels, cream of tartar and water. Working from the outside of the stain, blot with one part detergent and two parts hydrogen peroxide. If this doesn’t work, you can make a paste from the cream of tartar and water. Allow it to set for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water and blot with a clean, dampened towel. Always remember to blot, rather than scrub, as scrubbing will spread the stain further.

Removing food smells

It’s lovely to walk into a house that smells of Thanksgiving food – roasting turkey, home-made gravy, vegetables and pumpkin pie all smell delicious. Three days later, not so much. And if you burned anything, it’ll be even worse. Open the windows for a few hours, and clean the surface areas as food smells linger on carpets and even walls. How to Clean a Chandelier

Mount your ladder (which, of course, is a safe one!) and up you go, wearing soft gloves and armed with soft cloths. Use a dilute solution of washing-up liquid or white vinegar. Gently does it when it comes to the chandelier!

Apply small amounts of the cleaning product to the cloth (not the light directly) and off you go. Softly, now! Wipe as thoroughly as you can and then polish with another, dry cloth.

Wipe the bulbs with a dry cloth and then replace them.

For white plastic, you need a gallon of warm water and 3tbsp of dishwashing powder, as this contains chemicals that will whiten the plastic. Use a sponge or soft brush to apply and leave the solution on the furniture for fifteen minutes. Rinse and dry. Use this on white plastic ONLY.

For coloured plastic, use an all-purpose cleaner and water, and rinse well.

Aluminium that has a baked-on enamel finish is easy to scratch, so use a sponge soaked in detergent and water or a non-abrasive specialist cleaner. Scrub, rinse and dry.

If you want to keep the shine on plastics, resins and metal furniture, wax it. remove the cushions first, as wax can stain. Apply with a soft cloth, allow to dry and buff well.

For outdoor cushions, mix a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent with one quart warm water and one tablespoon of Borax. Soak a sponge in the mix and wash the cushions. Or you can put the mixture in a spray bottle and saturate the back and front of the cushions. Let the soaked cushions sit for fifteen minutes and then spray with plenty of water. Stand them on their side to try. Once dry, spray with a fabric protector. You can also vacuum the cushions between washes to keep the dust off.

If you have canvas seats, most of the time the canvas is removeable, so you can take it off and place it in the washing machine. It is easier to put the canvas back on while it is damp, as this will help it keep its shape.

If you can’t take it off, use a scrubbing brush and laundry soap. Load the brush with the soap and scrub the canvas. Rinse well. This should get rid of all stains and dirt.
