How to Clean a Chandelier

Maid Service RockvilleWe know cleaning a chandelier sounds like a tip many of you will not need, writes Maid Service Rockville, but bear with me…

If you do own one, you will know how beautiful this home ornamentation truly is. It is also one gigantic pain in the b**t to clean. And if you don’t have one, but aspire to the crystal-dusted light illuminating your home at some point, you’ll find these tips useful!

Nowadays, chandeliers come in all shapes and sizes. They can be made from authentic crystal or glass—their price eye-wateringly expensive or more towards the budget end of the market. No matter, grime or grease build-up will spoil the look of your beautiful light, or damage it.

Maid Service Rockville says, ‘We don’t want that! No, no, no!’

Your crystal chandelier will need cleaning every six to nine months. If flies don’t hover underneath as soon as it is switched on, clean it NOW. (Flies like the light. If the thing is too dirty, they aren’t attracted… Swings and roundabouts, hmm?)

Switch off your power supply before you start. Sounds obvious, I know, but I’ve seen some nasty accidents happen to those who don’t. Remove the bulbs too.

Keep a torch or other light at hand. You will probably need it to clean your chandelier properly. Place an old sheet on the ground to stop dust spreading far and wide.

Keep hold of your manufacturer’s instructions. You might need to take the chandelier apart, and all those glittery little pieces can look exactly the same when they are lying on the floor. Want to be able to put them back together? Then you need the instructions! Alternatively, take a photo of your chandelier before you pull it to pieces.

Mount your ladder (which, of course, is a safe one!) and up you go, wearing soft gloves and armed with soft cloths. Use a dilute solution of washing-up liquid or white vinegar. Gently does it when it comes to the chandelier!

Apply small amounts of the cleaning product to the cloth (not the light directly) and off you go. Softly, now! Wipe as thoroughly as you can and then polish with another, dry cloth.

Wipe the bulbs with a dry cloth and then replace them.

There we go—bright light once more, and a fixture in your room everyone can stare at and admire!

Here at Budget Maids, we provide cleaning services in Reston, Maid Service Rockville or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us clean your crystal chandeliers for you. They will be sparkling in no time.

Maid Service Olney – Bed Cleaning

A comedian on Twitter recently ran a poll asking how often people cleaned their duvets. Most people chose the ‘Wait, that’s a thingMaid Service Olney?!” reply…

Yes, it is a THING, people. We know it’s one of those cleaning jobs that seems a little pointless. You put a cover on it when you sleep under it, right? But Maid Service Olney wants to tell you your duvet should be cleaned regularly – every six months or so. If you live in a warm climate or your pets regularly join you on the bed (hmm!), then washing the duvet more frequently is advised.

There are rules for duvet washing. Don’t wash it with the cover on. You might need to use a laundromat, as domestic washing machines are limited in size and fitting in a king-size duvet won’t work. Gentle detergents work best, and you can use baking soda or borax to keep the duvet a nice white color.

What about the other things that make up your bed, such as the mattress and the pillows?

The pillows have the eww factor for sure, Maid Service Olney assures you. Doctors have discovered that almost a third of the pillow’s weight can be made up of dead skin, bugs, mites and their feces… Your average unwashed pillow can have as many as 16 species of fungi on it. Washing them every three months or so, checking the instructions so you use the right temperature setting.

Then, there’s your mattress. Again, like the duvet your mattress spends most of its working life covered. But keeping it clean is essential, as this will preserve its life. Mattresses usually contain traces of sweat, blood, urine, other bodily fluids as well as mold and dust mites.

Vacuuming or steaming the mattress every six months will help clear up dust mite feces that can cause allergic reactions, as well as get rid of the fungi and mold spores. Once you have vacuumed your mattress, deodorize it by sprinkling it with baking soda. Using a soft brush, work the soda into the mattress and then vacuum once more. You should then flip the mattress and do the other side.

If you want to make mattress cleaning as simple as possible, buy a machine-washable mattress topper. It won’t need cleaning as often as you change your sheets, which should be every week for best effect.

Here at Budget Maids we provide cleaning services in Reston, a Maid Service Olney or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure your bedroom is as clean as your bed?

Cleaning Up After Pets – house cleaning Potomac

house cleaning Potomac

They’re cute – but messy too!

If you have pets, you might worry that a cleaning company such as house cleaning Potomac can cope.

Never fear! We have years of experience of cleaning homes, and we know people’s beloved pets are family members. We use environmentally-friendly cleaning products and methods to ensure your precious pooch or marvellous moggie is unharmed by anything we do. We’re used to cleaning up after pets too, so if your animal is home when we visit – that’s no problem either.

We have some advice to help you if you want to keep your home clean when you have pets:

  1. Groom your dog or cat regularly. This will minimise the shedding they do – so less dog or cat hair to vacuum up. It’s also an excellent way to bond with your pet, and it lets you keep an eye on any potential flea situations…
  2. If your animal does get fleas, remember you will need to treat the house as well as your pet. Wash any bedding he or she uses, as well as any cushions the animal uses. You might want to consider professional carpet cleaning such as the service we at house cleaning Potomac offer, as this is great for getting rid of critters.
  3. Carpet cleaning is also useful if your pet has had an accident… Bear in mind with cats that if they wee somewhere inside, they are likely to return to the same place as they’ll be able to smell the urine even when you can’t. A specialist cleaning product will be necessary to eliminate the odor completely.
  4. Keep a supply of sticky tape or special pet sponges in the home as this will help remove excess quantities of pet hair.
  5. If your pet has stomach trouble, this can be tricky to clear up because vomit is so acidic. If possible, clean it up as soon as you can. Use kitchen towels to pick up as much as you can, then treat the area with a professional carpet detergent. Rinse the area thoroughly with clean, hot water. Hopefully, this will bring the carpet back to a neutral pH.

Bear in mind that it can take up to two years to eradicate a home of pet hair… If you are moving on and selling your home, you might want to consider specialists services such as house cleaning Potomac to leave the place spick and span.

Outdoor Furniture Cleaning Tips

maid service RockvilleOutdoor furniture needs cleaning too – as our maid service Rockville will tell you.

But is there an easy way to do this? After all, you don’t want to add yet more things to your to do list. (Although, of course, our maid service Rockville could also do it for you!) Here are our tips for making outdoor furniture cleaning as easy as possible…

For white plastic, you need a gallon of warm water and 3tbsp of dishwashing powder, as this contains chemicals that will whiten the plastic. Use a sponge or soft brush to apply and leave the solution on the furniture for fifteen minutes. Rinse and dry. Use this on white plastic ONLY.

For coloured plastic, use an all-purpose cleaner and water, and rinse well.

Aluminium that has a baked-on enamel finish is easy to scratch, so use a sponge soaked in detergent and water or a non-abrasive specialist cleaner. Scrub, rinse and dry.

If you want to keep the shine on plastics, resins and metal furniture, wax it. remove the cushions first, as wax can stain. Apply with a soft cloth, allow to dry and buff well.

For outdoor cushions, mix a teaspoon of dishwasher detergent with one quart warm water and one tablespoon of Borax. Soak a sponge in the mix and wash the cushions. Or you can put the mixture in a spray bottle and saturate the back and front of the cushions. Let the soaked cushions sit for fifteen minutes and then spray with plenty of water. Stand them on their side to try. Once dry, spray with a fabric protector. You can also vacuum the cushions between washes to keep the dust off.

If you have canvas seats, most of the time the canvas is removeable, so you can take it off and place it in the washing machine. It is easier to put the canvas back on while it is damp, as this will help it keep its shape.

If you can’t take it off, use a scrubbing brush and laundry soap. Load the brush with the soap and scrub the canvas. Rinse well. This should get rid of all stains and dirt.

If you clean your outdoor furniture regularly, it will last much longer – giving you plenty of years of sitting outside to enjoy the sunshine.

House Cleaning Potomac – Window Cleaning Tips

House Cleaning Potomac

Hopefully, your house doesn’t have windows like these…

Cleaning windows – here at House Cleaning Potomac, we know this job can be a pain in the a**!

But there are ways to make the job easier. Read on to find out how the cleaning pros tackle windows with a will!

First off, you will need a bucket of cleaning solution, a scrubber or sponge and a squeegee. You might need a ladder too for windows on the second floor.

Outside windows often get stubborn marks or stains such as bird droppings and concentrated dirt and grime. Clean these first. One way of dealing them is to spray the area with pure vinegar. Leave it to sit for five minutes. Use a cloth of sponge to rub it off and then continue to clean the entire window.

Crusty stains or deposits can be removed with a razor.

The outside of the window gets much dirtier than the inside. Tackle this by spraying the windows with the garden hose before cleaning. This will help get rid of the worst of it.

House Cleaning Potomac – Home-made Window Cleaner

To make your own window cleaner, you can use equal parts of water and distilled white vinegar. This will help prevent streaks. You can also use dishwashing liquid but use this sparingly, as most modern formulations are highly concentrated. All you need is one teaspoon per two gallons of water.

A sponge is the best way to apply cleaning solution. Dip it into the mix, squeeze it out and apply over the whole window. If you are cleaning from the inside, put down towels or sheets to absorb water spills.

Use the squeegee to wipe the windows dry. For small-paned windows, move horizontally from side to side. Larger windows can be done top to bottom. A sharp blade on the squeegee prevents streaks. Replace yours when the blade gets dull.

Wipe the window with a lint-free cloth. Use a different cloth to dry the window frame thoroughly.

Don’t forget your blinds. These should be cleaned regularly too, as they pick up grime and ust easily.

Here at Budget Maids we provide House Cleaning Potomac, a maid service in Vienna or cleaning services in Falls Church and surrounds, cleaning services in Olney and Oakton and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure your windows are sparkling clean all the time?

Budget Maids Time-Saving Cleaning

Budget MaidsWhy book regular cleaning services through companies such as Budget Maids?

Well, the main thing is you get your life back! The average American working week is about 49 hours. Who wants to come home and spend the time cleaning?

Sleep! Seven to eight hours of sleep is ideal. You’ll wake up (in your gorgeously clean bedroom, thanks to Budget Maids) feeling refreshed and energetic.

Barbecue. The summer’s here, so of course, you want to invite friends and family for a barbecue. Continuing on the outsourcing theme, tell them it’s a potluck barbecue. They can bring the sides, the salads and the ice-cream and you’ll do the cooking. (Budget Maids can clean it up for you afterwards.)

Take up a new hobby. We bet there’s some hobby or craft you’ve wanted to take up for a while, but what with work and cleaning, you haven’t found the time. Now, thanks to Budget Maids, you have it in abundance.

Spend quality time with friends. This is something else that tends to fall by the wayside when we’re working hard. Go bowling, arrange a group picnic. Better still, invite friends around to your newly-tidy home, eat cakes and drink wine.

Do some outdoor stuff. What’s your fancy? Hiking? Running? Quad biking? Whatever it is, treat yourself to plenty of fresh air, safe in the knowledge that you will be returning to a super-clean home.

Take your dog an extra long walk. Heat permitting, your dog will love a long walk with you now that you have time to spare. Regular walks contribute to the health of both of you.

Cook a special meal. Weekdays, we tend to grab and go when it comes to food. Now that you don’t need to spend your weekends cleaning, why not pick a recipe that takes a little longer. Pulled pork done in the crock pot is super easy. Serve with brioche buns, homemade slaw and crackling on the side.

Workout Gear Washing – Cleaning Service Falls Church

Cleaning Service Falls ChurchCleaning Service Falls Church – Washing Tips

Now that the summer is well and truly here, you’re probably sweating buckets every time you work out. No wonder. Soaring temperatures and hard work tend to do that to a body.

Washing your workout gear properly is a must-do, if you want the clothes to last and so that you don’t offend your fellow gym goers. Some brands of fitness gear boast antimicrobial properties. They will still need washing, though!

Here are the Cleaning Service Falls Church rules to washing your workout gear:

Follow the instructions. It sounds like common sense, we know, but a lot of people lump their gear in with their normal washing. Because workout clothing tends to be made from special hi-tech fabrics nowadays, it might have different requirements from the rest of your clothes. Go carefully.

Don’t use fabric softener. We know it smells nice, but the liquid tends to coat the hi-tech fibres in gym gear and prevents them from being able to absorb water properly.

Ca’ canny with the detergent (sorry, we couldn’t resist a little Scottish-ism). In other words, don’t use too much. It’s tempting to tip in lots of washing powder when something stinks to high heaven, but washing cycles work better when the recommended amount is used. There are such products as sport-specific detergents that are probably worth trying.

Wash quickly. The longer your gear sits in your sports bag, the more likely it is to build up mold and mildew. Eww…

Soak your gear if necessary. Very smelly clothing can be soaked in cold water and a mild detergent solution. This will help neutralise the aroma.

Dry naturally. Workout clothing dried on the line or on a clothes rack responds better than clothing dried near a heater or in the drier.

It’s tempting to throw your trainers or sneakers into the washing machine, but this will ruin the cushioning so they won’t protect your feet and joints in the same way. Use an odor spray, or clean by hand.

Here at Budget Maids we provide Cleaning Services Falls Church, a maid service Olney or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure that all your household washing is tackled quickly and efficiently?

How to Clean Your Silverware – House Cleaning Rockville

House Cleaning RockvilleThe House Cleaning Rockville experts run a regular ‘how to clean’ articles. This time, we’re looking at silverware.

Whether it’s plates, cups, jewellery or cutlery, silver can quickly develop a dull look. This happens when it is exposed to oxygen and certain chemicals. As oxygen is in the air, you can see why silver tarnishes so easily.

How Often do House Cleaning Rockville Experts Recommend Cleaning Silver?

The more often silver is used, the less likely it is to tarnish. Otherwise, it depends on how your silver is stored. Don’t store in plastic bags or wraps, and don’t use rubber bands. Petroleum-based products break down over time and stain silver. Make cleaning a job you do every two to three months.

Rubbing Alcohol

You can use rubbing alcohol to clean silver. You will need a bottle of this, a medium-sized bowl and a clean cloth. Combine one part rubbing alcohol with four parts water in the bowl. Dip the cloth in the mixture and use to clean the tarnished parts of silver. Wipe your silver dry with a clean, soft cloth.

Dishwashing Liquid and Silver Polish

Use dish-washing liquid and silver polish for cleaning lightly tarnished silverware. You’ll also need a polishing cloth. Fill a medium bowl with arm water and add three to five drops of dish-washing liquid. Place the silver items in the soapy mixture. Clean the items with a sponge and then rinse in warm water. Dry thoroughly with a towel. Place a small amount of silver polish on your polishing cloth. Rub the silverware, as per the instructions on the silver polish. Use another clean cloth to buff the polish off. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions. Most polishes don’t need to be rinsed off.

Here are some more do’s and don’t’s for silver and silver-plated items:

  • Don’t wash silver or silver plate in the dishwasher
  • Don’t use fine silver when serving foods containing eggs or mayonnaise. The ingredients will mark the silver.
  • When you wash silver, don’t use a lemon-based detergent
  • Do not use Brillo pads or wire wool on silver.
  • Remove salt and pepper thoroughly from silver shakers when not in use to prevent corrosion.

Here at Budget Maids we provide House Cleaning Rockville services, a maid service in Oakton or cleaning services in Columbia and surrounds, and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you ensure that your silverware is perfectly cleaned and stored?

cleaning services Arlington

Cleaning Services Arlington – Barbecue Safety

cleaning services ArlingtonHey, it’s barbecue season and cleaning services Arlington is sure you’re getting ready for some fun summer parties.

If you are planning a barbecue, it’s important to keep hygiene and food safety rules in mind. You don’t want people to remember your party for all the wrong reasons the next day when they’re confined to the bathroom.

Here are our cleaning tips for your barbecue safety…

Cook on a clean barbecue. Want to know how to clean your barbecue? Check out our cleaning services Arlington post here. As well as promoting hygiene, a clean barbecue works better, and you’ll enjoy evenly-cooked food fast.

Keep raw and cooked meats apart. Raw meat should be stored in the fridge until you cook it. Allow ten minutes out of the fridge for the food to come to room temperature. Use different plates, tools and chopping boards for raw and cooked meat. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat, using warm water and soap.

Charred doesn’t mean cooked. Sausages and burgers can be burnt on the outside, but still raw inside. Turn the meat regularly to stop it burning, and cut it open to check.

Don’t Wash

Do NOT wash raw chicken or other raw meat. This spreads germs. Cooking for the appropriate time will kill the bacteria present in raw meat while washing it spreads germs and bacteria such as campylobacter.

Wash salad leaves. Give them a clean with cold water and dry in a salad spinner. Add mayo-based dressings at the last minute so that your salad doesn’t sit around in the heat with a raw egg based dressing.

Keep anti-bacteria wipes handy. Most of us will be eating barbecue foods with our hands. That’s part of the pleasure, right? If you’ve got kids present, their little hands might not be as clean as they should be. Keep wipes handy, so everyone can get stuck into their food, germ-free.

Barbecue safety also means avoiding burns and fires.

  • Make sure your barbecue is stable, secure and sturdy.
  • Check it is in good condition before you start.
  • Locate it away from fences, sheds and overhanging trees.
  • Don’t light in an enclosed space.
  • Never pour petrol or fire-lighting accelerant onto your barbecue.
  • Don’t leave children unsupervised near a barbecue, and check your equipment is fully extinguished before you leave it alone.

Here at Budget Maids, we provide cleaning services Arlington, a maid service in Vienna or cleaning services in Falls Church and surrounds, cleaning services in Olney and Oakton and more. Why not give us a call today and let us help you get your home ready for a great summer barbecue party?
